I see this a lot.
For new players it can be a bit daunting when you start down the road of raiding, especially with the regular new influx of players every time the game gets put on sale. For a game that has been out for three years there are a lot of youtube videos out there already, some of which will be outdated. (Anyone had a new raid lead that wants to rotate round the room on Boomer? I have!) .. Try to filter any videos you watch based on which title update they pertain to, or a least how new they are. A two year old raid guide will not match the way the raids are run at the moment, so bear that in mind.
Also don't panic. As with all things internet, there are good and bad raids, and here I'm hoping to identify for you which one you're in.
1. You really do need some kind of voice comms, don't be shy, you're not expected to introduce yourself and give a brief overview of your game experience, or justify your raid ability. Simply hop on, and if the raid leader asks you how many you've done, or whether you have a build, be honest.
Good Raid: You'll be put in the beginner positions, and helped with your build.
Bad Raid: You'll be kicked.
2. Be honest about your abilities, if you are asked to do a specific role and you don't know how, just say so.
Good Raid: You'll be talked through what you're expected to do, given some tips on how to do it, and it might take a few runs to get used to it.
Bad Raid: You'll be kicked.
3. Don't be afraid to say why you're there. If you're in the raid purely for the exotics, and you don't really give a shit about learning anything, say so. If you actually want to learn how to raid, say so (the good raid leaders love this, as it gives them a chance to flex)
Good Raid: You'll be carried or taught, and the seven other people helping you will know exactly what to expect.
Bad Raid: You'll be kicked.
4. If you're kicked, well.. then that raid leader was a bad raid leader, just chalk it up to experience and don't raid with them again.
You'll find an example of a bad raid in the videos section.
